Theres another level in you. You can just make. Dean Smith is now addressing the troops at the end of practice. And so what this motivates all of them to do is to compete. So all of a sudden I was collecting all this data on all of the kids and what their teammates thought of their character. And in changing that and sending then in the right direction all of a sudden a substandard player goes to a different level because now shes finally accountable for performance, whereas earlier she had a narrative that protected her from being responsible and accountable, and now all of a sudden we expose that, and now shes selected to be more accountable and her game goes to a completely different level. So those three fundamental things, basically the core values, which is character construction, the competitive cauldron, which is basically mentality construction. I am never going to make this travel roster unless I change. And now all of a sudden theyre going to become responsible for everything. I dont think he understands who is in the room. He also requires them to memorize the core value quotations and he tests them in front of the team and in every player conference. So in your case, you know, someone with an incredible high IQ or some Harvard graduate that finished, you know, summa cum laude. I want them to win gold medals in the Olympics. If a woman is incredibly confident, I am never going to touch that. actually neither that ancient, nor Chinese. Anson: And you speak to a parent, you know, theyre doing the same thing. She was so frustrated with her professional coach. Thats what we call the competitive ballgame. Yes. But when I played for you, I could feel the love between the criticism and around the criticism. Every year, Dorrance gives his players a series of assessments (including the Grit Scale ) and makes them memorize literary quotes that represent the team's values. So not only do we have 28 different categories, but all the categories have different value, and some of the value is extraordinary if you dont achieve in it you dont even get to practice with us. And so this data collection is critical because what we can project, we can project where a kids going to go based on this fundamental principle of the cauldron. Under some delusion that these parents have, they think that by trying to raise their children with this idea of self-esteem or their praise for everyone, which is a part of the culture where everyone gets a trophy, they have eliminated standards for their own children. So I have also read that you sit down with your players once a year to kind of do an overall player evaluation. And I know that thats something in the corporate world thats been a really hot topic lately, are performance reviews and giving people real time performance feedback. Everyone is motivated differently and youve got to get to the core of who they are. Theres no cookie-cutter route to creating the people you want. One of the toughest things with women is to get them to lead verbally, because what every woman in the room understands, as soon as a woman leader opens her mouth everyones going to think shes a bitch. But my HR person is also fantastic and plays a huge role in it, so I agree with your concepts. One is that I am going to improve by trying to beat everyone to death and every single minute of every single practice, but also the other kids will benefit from that because in order to deal with me, they have to raise their competitive level as well. Ive learned the lesson that some people just dont want to be in my culture. I didnt think there was a coach in the world that I couldnt play for. And I said why? Every one of them has memorized that. So anyway, so here is one experiment I tried 1 year. Anson: And whats written here is, Now is the period to escape the protection of loving parents. In the old days, because I love reading business books, Ive read all the business books of best sellers and Ive read them all. The kid has come home from school with all Fs on his report card. So please grab Arthur Blanks book and read it and then take it to heart. So if we have 30 players in the roster, in the 28 different categories everyones ranked from 1 to 30. And in the old days I never shared any of this data with any of my kids. Anson: We do it early in the fall. One thing I loved about what Dean Smith did, though, our legendary former basketball coach who was the coach for Michael Jordan, is when back in the days when people didnt commit early, whenever he took an in house visit he would study how the kid treated his parents. So we have these more formal reviews basically 3 times a year. And heres what she tells me. And now all of a sudden theres this circular narrative built with the player that now the players feeding off of. And the thing, whats interesting about reading all these books is what theyre all telling us is youve got to have a set of core values and youve got to live by them. So what I tried 1 year is I said listen, the press is going to call me next year and theyre going to ask me who my leaders are, and Im going to sort of mention all of your names. And then we also have them evaluate every teammate on whether or not they were living each core value, and we did it on a 4 point scale, sort of like a GPA, so 4 is obviously a 4.0, its an A average, so 4 is an extraordinary example of this core value.
